Who will still be clattering across the cobbles in 2023?

(This post was originally posted by Clinkers (David) on the Coronation Street Blog in July 2013.)

What will the future bring for the good folk of Weatherfield? Well, we don't know. Far be it from this humble blogger to even begin to guess the twists and turns that lay ahead for the characters we love (and loathe).

Possibly the more interesting question to ponder is exactly how many of the current cast have the power or appeal to last another decade? Are there enough stories to be told about some of them or are we already reaching the end of the line?

Given increased longevity in society and barring illness, there's no reason why the likes of Rita, Emily and Dennis should not be still propping up the Rovers bar come 2023. There also has to be a strong possibility of glittering futures for the likes of Eileen, Gail, Fiz and Tyrone, Steve and Mich . . .err, maybe just Steve. Anna Windass has the makings of a good long-term character but the constant swapping between 'Soppy Anna' and 'Harridan Anna' is a little jarring and does her no favours. Likewise Leanne. Another decade of her contorting her face and stamping around small sets does not make for great drama. For me, Jane Danson shines as one of the programme's better actresses so it's odd that the producers keep her in this perpetual Peter/Nick loop.

I'm hoping that both Sally and Deirdre grow old disgracefully. After Dreary's woeful (but hilarious) handling of Roy's sleepwalking last week, I think it's safe to say that Mrs Barlow has a wonderful future ahead of her as a slightly barmy late middle aged woman. She is going to be fun to watch, especially if she morphs into her own mother.

Tracy and St Ella aside (I think we read too much about them on here), there are arguably a whole host of characters with a short shelf life. Think about it. Does anyone burst into raptures at the idea of Dev, Maria, any of the Armstrongs including FayE, Ryan, continuing in ever decreasing circles for another decade?

Which current residents do you think will still have the power to entertain us in 2023?

I think Sean should be around, visited frquently by a cute but slightly rascally Dylan. Sophie should get a trade... or take over Deb's shop. I want Beth & Kirk together with a half sibling for Craig. Craig gets on a slimming, muscle building kick & becomess the heartthrob of the young girls. Amy becomes a smart business woman with her dad's bonhomie & her Mom's killer instinct.... and Granddad's wandering ways.
